WINTER is the Elemental Season of STILLNESS, the NORTH, the NIGHT, the COLD and WATER. It is the season of conserving our resources, turning inward, gathering our strength and tending the deep reserves that sustain us.
But by late Winter, something begins to change.
Beneath the apparent stillness, Spring is already gathering itself. The days lengthen. The first stirrings begin underground. What has been resting and consolidating begins to move outward again.
This series follows that transition—from the deep inwardness of Winter toward the burgeoning expansion of Spring.
Winter can leave us chilled, depleted or energetically contracted if we don’t attend to our physical, emotional and energetic care. The good news is that tending ourselves in Winter doesn’t have to be difficult. It can be engaging, comforting, warming and even fun.
We will begin by cultivating warmth, strength and resilience, nourishing the Kidneys and Water Element, protecting and circulating our Qi, and learning to rest within Winter’s quiet.
As the series progresses, we will gradually shift from conservation toward circulation, from stillness toward movement, and from Water toward Wood—preparing the body, Qi and Shen for Spring’s expansive energy.
INNER ALCHEMICAL PRACTICES
Throughout the series we will learn—or refine and expand—the foundational Qi circulation practices of MICROCOSMIC ORBIT, THRUSTING CHANNEL and BELT CHANNEL circulations.
We will explore how these practices can be used to nourish and protect our energy, strengthen the Kidneys and Water Element Qi, and create a strong, circulating energetic foundation.
We will also delve more deeply into KAN & LI, the alchemical practice of Fire and Water that “cooks” and transforms our Qi and Shen bodies—nourishing, strengthening and refining us.
As we move toward Spring, these circulation practices become especially important: rather than simply holding and conserving Qi, we begin to free it, circulate it and prepare it to move outward.
DREAM PRACTICES
Winter is also a season of mystery and dreaming.
The long nights and inward-turning quality of the season can open us to Dreamtime and deeper esoteric practices. We will investigate Taoist Dream practices as a way to invite greater awareness into sleep, work with troubling dreams when necessary, and deepen our relationship with our Dream Self and the stories it conjures.
We will practice Inviting Dreams, Guiding Dreams, Dream Sharing and Re-entering Dreams, exploring dreams not simply as something that happens while we sleep, but as another way of listening to the deeper layers of ourselves.
MOVEMENT & BREATH
Alongside the Inner Alchemy practices, we will practice the shamanic movement practice MYSTICAL WARRIOR QIGONG, connected to the Celestial Animals of the North and therefore to Winter and Water.
We will also work with other movement and breath practices that support warmth, circulation, grounding and resilience.
As Spring approaches, the quality of movement will gradually shift. We will begin to invite more opening, reaching, spiraling and outward expansion, allowing the body to experience the transition from Winter’s gathering energy toward Spring’s emerging Wood Qi.
STILLNESS → EMERGENCE
We will not simply resist Winter’s tendency toward stillness. We will use it.
There will be moments of quiet and stillness during and after our active practices, allowing us to settle, listen and align with what Winter offers.
But stillness is not the end of the journey.
A seed is still in the earth before it breaks open.
The purpose of this series is to experience that transition: to gather, nourish and strengthen ourselves in Winter so that when Spring calls us outward, we have something substantial from which to grow.
The ten classes will therefore travel a seasonal arc—from Water to Wood, from Winter to Spring, from conservation to circulation, from inwardness to emergence.
